Birmingham Crematorium commemorates 110th anniversary
Birmingham Crematorium, the oldest crematorium in the Midlands, commemorated its 110th anniversary on Sunday 21 July with a special Remembrance Service for local families and the community.
The Reverend David Barber of Kings Heath Baptist Church led the Service assisted by Canon Sean McTernan and Father Darren Smith. The ministers were accompanied by the choir of St Mark’s Church, Kingstanding, who reunited especially for the Service and the Birmingham Citadel Salvation Army Band. White doves were released from their carrier during the service and soared into air before twice circling the crematorium to represent the beginning of the grieving process and ‘letting go of the deceased’.
Birmingham Crematorium has been serving its community since 1903. It was the ninth crematorium to be built in the UK at a cost of £7,000 and was opened by Sir Henry Thompson, the first President of the Cremation Society.
