Rotherham Crematorium hosts Memorial Service for Normandy Veterans

At 11.00 a.m. on Sunday 6 June, a Memorial Service was held at Rotherham Crematorium to remember and honour the Normandy Veterans on the 66th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

Members of the Rotherham Veterans Association attended the service to remember their fallen colleagues and to commemorate the ultimate sacrifice they made for their country. Last year, Dignity, who became responsible for the management of the crematorium in August 2008, renovated the D-Day Veterans Memorial and provided a Union Flag and flagpole. Dignity also provided the services of a piper and bugler to accompany the Memorial Service.

This year the Normandy Veterans were joined for the service by a contingent of local Sea Cadets. The youngsters marched through the crematorium grounds behind the piper to join twelve campaign veterans at the memorial. The service, which was attended by approximately 40 people, included the laying of a wreath, the playing of ‘The Last Post’ and ‘The Reveille Bugle Call’ and concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.
