C S Bowyer Funeral Directors

The history of our Wiltshire funeral directors

Our founder, Herbert Bowyer

Herbert Sydney Bowyer can be traced back to 1881, and was a carpenter and builder for the first part of his working life. He loved playing the organ, and did so at a local church for many years, as well as playing billiards and bowls. He was a local councillor and a well-known, respected man in the community.

Over the years

As a carpenter and builder, Herbert was well equipped to make coffins, and did so with care and craftsmanship. He began this occupation at a local funeral directors called J F Goodall, before opening his own funeral home on Trowbridge Road, Bradford-on-Avon. The address changed a lot over the following years, with moves to Whiteheads Lane, Church Street and then finally, The Bull Pit, which is beautifully situated overlooking the Town Bridge and the river.

Growth and expansion

During the 80s, the business began to grow, which saw the opening of a brand new premises in Trowbridge, with a full mortuary, garage, arrangement room, reception area, chapel of rest and office. The company changed its name as the generations passed by; starting as H S Bowyer & Co, and changed to H S Bowyer & Son, and then to its current name, C S Bowyer. We are lucky enough to have Chris still in touch with us today.
