O W Ellis Funeral Directors
The Beginning: Ochie Ellis
Oscar Wynn Ellis, known by his friends and family as Ochie, began his career as a joiner, while working at Hawker Siddeley Aviation, Broughton. In 1962 he decided to invest in a Hackney cab, so he could taxi his fellow colleagues to and from the factory they worked at.
It became clear that Ochie had an interest in helping people and wanted to become a funeral director. While still working as a joiner, in 1963 he began to conduct funeral services on a part time basis, from his home in Woodlane, Hawarden. He was conducting around one funeral each month.
When he resigned from Hawker Siddeley in 1964, he was able to focus his time solely on conducting funerals. This allowed him to provide one or two services per week.
Developments over the years
By 1976, O W Ellis of Harwarden was a well-known and respected funeral directors in the area. Ochie made the decision to invest in a second location, since the Lloyds Bank in Shotton had gone up for sale. After purchasing the building, developments were made to equip them with the right facilities for a funeral home, with new chapels of rest that are still part of O W Ellis to this day.
It is with great sadness that Ochie passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack, at the young age of 56. However O W Ellis Funeral Directors has continued to be a valued part of the Deeside community, and Ochie's values of compassion and professionalism remain at the heart of how we help people today.
