Thompsons Funeral Directors
The Early Years
For nearly 80 years, Thompsons Funeral Furnishers had worked from their head office at 135 County Road, Walton, which was a location that many of the people in the community were familiar with.
When it became clear that a new location was needed to better equip them to serve the needs of the families of Merseyside, an investment of £100,000 was made for the head office to move to 274 Bedford Road in Bootle.
A New Start
The new offices had undergone many refurbishments, providing Thompsons with the very best facilities to care for families and their loved ones. The ground floor, which was once the factory area, was to be where the fleet was stored, garaging grey Daimler limousines and hearses. Vehicles that belonged to the staff could also park here; this was a nice change from the busy and crowded County Road, which had proved itself a difficult parking spot due to being an extremely busy area.
Five brand new chapels of rest were built, which were blessed by clergy of various denominations. The brand new embalming theatre was the most modern of its time, and was run by qualified professionals. Other additions to the building included arranging rooms, a waiting room and offices, all with tastefully decorated with a modernised design.
This was a big step forward for the funeral furnishing business, and the move was recognised widely throughout the community. An opening ceremony took place on Friday 21st November 1986, conducted by The Mayor of Sefton, Councillor Peter Papworth, and Mayoress Nancy Papworth.
