Dr Janan Abdul Nour Murad passed away peacefully in her sleep on the 6th July 2023 aged 81 years old in the presence of her daughters Lynette Murad and Bushra Murad Antun.  She will be greatly missed by her daughters, her son in law Mark Antun and her beloved grandchildren Gabriella and Melina Antun.
Janan was born on 3 May 1942 in Mosul Iraq to parents Najib and Selma Abdul Nour. She was second youngest of seven children, Fathalla, Saib, Najla, Huda, Afaf, Janan and Manal. As a child she grew up surrounded by her siblings, uncles, aunts, many cousins and her nieces and nephews.  She was well known for her sense of fun, her sharp wit and ability to speak her mind.
She studied medicine at university in Mosul and graduated as a doctor working for a few years before deciding to move to the UK in the early 70’s.  She first worked in Bradford, before moving to work for St James’s hospital in Leeds as an OB GYN where she met her husband Hikmat Phillip Murad who had been working in Leeds as an accountant.
They moved to St Johns Wood London and married in 1973.  Their first daughter Lynette was born in 1975, and her second daughter was born in 1978. They decided to move their expanded family to Epsom, Surrey, where she worked at Epsom General Hospital.  Sadly, shortly afterwards both Janan and Hikmat lost their vision, becoming partially sighted and making it difficult to continue to work in their planned careers. Not letting their limited vision set them back, they joined forces and created a medical company selling incubators and other medical supplies to the Middle East.
They spent the next years working, travelling, entertaining, and helping others who had recently arrived in the UK find their feet.  People often came to them for advice and support on a range of matters. Janan had a devout faith and regularly attended St Joseph’s Catholic church in Epsom as well as Syrian Orthodox mass in London. In 2006 her husband, Hikmat, passed away and she moved to London. There, she was able to become more involved in the Syrian Orthodox Church and contributed to the establishment of St Thomas’s in Acton.  She regularly attended mass there and was an important member of the parish community.
She was a keen bridge player and regularly hosted bridge parties in Epsom and was a member of the bridge club in London.  After the passing of her husband Janan continued to travel, often to Jordan, Canada and liked to spend a lot of time in the US where her daughter was living with her husband and Janan’s grandchildren Gabriella and Melina.
She was first diagnosed with breast cancer aged 55 and sadly lost her battle with it at St Teresa’s Care Home, after having lived with it for over 25 years. In her later years she received a lot of support from many people including Sundus Hasso, Shireen Sarah, Ban Kassir, Aziz Abdul Nour and their children.  They were very dear to her, and she appreciated them very much.
