In loving memory of Susan Coates, of Chester Moor, County Durham, who passed away peacefully at St. Cuthbert's Hospice on Saturday, 20th January following a long battle with cancer, at the age of 64.

Susan was a cherished mother to Alex and Ben, a devoted, caring and loving mother-in-law, grandma, sister, aunty and cousin. She left a lasting, indelible impact on the hearts of all her family and friends.

Soo, as she was affectionately known, was a beloved teacher, dedicating many years to enriching the lives of students, parents, and colleagues at St. Gregory's RC Primary School, Harton House Road, South Shields. Her commitment to providing a fun, inclusive and nurturing education experience made her a favourite teacher for many. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched across the region.

Beyond her role as an educator, Soo was once an active member of the Durham Guild of Spinners, Weavers, and Dyers, and she served as the Secretary for the Association of Guilds of Weavers, Spinners, and Dyers. Her humour and compassion left an unforgettable mark on the weaving community, touching the hearts of many.

In her time with the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, Soo was Branch Secretary for Durham and served on the National Executive representing the North East. She was an inspiring learning rep, giving teachers the skills to take ownership of their creativity in their teaching by organising training sessions.

Soo had many union hats and supported countless individuals. She developed a formidable reputation for honesty, humour, and mischief, leaving a much loved and lasting impact on a large teaching and education community.

To celebrate Soo's remarkable life, we invite family and friends to join us for a service at Durham Crematorium on Thursday, 8th February, at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations are made to St. Cuthbert's Hospice who provided Soo with such wonderful care and love in her final weeks. A donation box will be available at the crematorium, or contributions can be made to the JustGiving page linked in this funeral notice.

As many of you will be aware, Soo’s favourite colour was Purple so we kindly ask all attending to ditch the black in favour of lots of bright colours (ideally some purple please!) and something comfy!

After the service, all are welcome to join us at The Church Mouse pub at Chester Moor (DH2 3RJ) where we have arranged some nibbles and drinks and an opportunity for friends and family to catch up in a dedicated space.

As we gather to bid farewell, let us celebrate Soo by remembering her for the love she shared, the knowledge she imparted, and the joy she brought into our lives. May she rest in peace.
