Born in Bath, John remained an almost lifelong citizen of the city, apart from being evacuated to Upton Cheyney during the Bath Blitz, and spending three years in the the States whilst working for Bendix Aerospace.
After attending Monkton Combe School, (Prep>Senior 1943>1956), John studied at EMI College of Electronics London, graduating from there in 1960 to start work for EMI, working on short range radar for missiles.
Following his marriage to Pauline in 1964, they later moved to Michigan USA to work on the Apollo programme, and in particular on the Active Seismic Experiment and Dust Detector. Some of John's work remains on the Moon.
Returning to the Uk in 1969, John continued to work on various Space related projects for British Aerospace, becoming Head of Space Activities at Filton, Bristol. Projects included Giotto, Hubble Space Telescope and naval weapons such as Sea Dart.
Following mergers and reorganisations, John became Engineering Director Dynamic Group, being responsible for a team of around 8000 on several sites in the country. After retiring from the company, he ran his own consulting business to the aerospace and defence industries, before finally retiring in 1994.
Aside from his career, John was a Francophile, owning a property near Nimes for twenty years, enjoying the culture there. In particular, he had a penchant for fine dining, visiting michelin starred establishments on a regular basis.
John's charitable work included posts of trustee to Bath Photographic Society Trust Fund, and trustee, treasurer and sometime chair of a local homeless charity. He was also a volunteer and Friend of Bath Abbey.
John enjoyed cooking, entertaining, wine-especially a good burgundy, the Arts, photography, gardening and,  as a self confessed 'petrol head', enjoyed driving his Jag rather fast.
He is survived by a sister
