My father had a cancer called myeloma, which is a type of cancer that affects plasma cells - a type of white blood cell found in the bone marrow. These cells are responsible for producing antibodies that help fight infections. The effects this causes on the body include bone pain and possible fractures, increased exposure to infections and diseases, vulnerability to becoming easily bruised and bleeds as well as becoming anaemic, reduced kidney function, and hypercalcemia, which causes nausea, constipation and frequent confusion. Subsequently, the treatments given to my father for improving quality of life caused a domino effect of conditions in addition to what this cancer caused, and yet my father, in all his strength, still fought on. A person living with this cancer can also struggle with the ordinary tasks of daily life due to the pain and often become dazed and clouded in the mind which is why it is important that the person receives great support. You can also support others with this cancer by donating to Myeloma UK, a charity which has influence in deciding patient outcome of treatments and mental support.
