When planning a funeral in Barnstaple, you may wish to consider the following:
- What kind of funeral will it be? Do you want a traditional funeral or something more contemporary or unique? Is it going to be a cremation or a burial, religious or humanist? If you've yet to make a decision, we will be able to help you reach one, based on your needs
- Where will it be held? The funeral service can be held in a number locations, not just a place of worship or a crematorium. Some people choose to hold the service at home, or in a village hall or hotel. We can advise on suitable venues in Barnstaple for your loved one's send off
- Will there be music or readings? You can make the funeral more personal by including a song or songs that your loved one liked or meant something to both of you. A reading, such as poetry or a passage of meaningful text can help bring comfort to those attending, and you may even wish to write or read the eulogy yourself
- Floral tributes or charity donations? A lot of people nowadays choose to forgo flowers and ask that the mourners make a contribution to a chosen charity instead. At the end of the day, the decision is entirely up to you.

01271 342774From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.
